Dr. ir. Karel Van Acoleyen awarded with the AIG-award

Dr. ir. Karel Van Acoleyen has been awarded with the AIG-award. The AIG-award, worth 2500 Euro, is awarded every four years to recognize a researcher who delivered the best original work in the Engineering sciences and made a true contribution to the promotion of it.

Dr. ir. Karel Van Acoleyen (MSc. Photonics 2008 - Doctor in de Ingenieurswetenschappen: fotonica 2012) won the AIG-award with his work 'Nanophotonic Beamsteering Elements Using Silicon Technology for Wireless Optical Applications' .
In this work, the feasibility of using an integrated photonics platform for optical beam steering was investigated. One- and two-dimensional beam steering functionality as well as phase reconstruction of scattered light on an integrated silicon photonics chip was shown. This has several applications in LIDAR, bio-sensing, optical interconnects and wireless optical communication.
