Only French. Three courses have
been set up for the "Masters of Science"-program and these are given in English
during the first term. The level of these courses however is quite high and they might
render the first trimester rather difficult. |

| timing |
ENST is working in trimesters, without any preparation for the examinations
(which are mostly in the last week, but sometimes also in the middle of a term). The year
starts at about the same date as in Ghent. First term ends before Christmasholidays. Each
lasts for three months, which brings the academical year to an end at the 4th
of July. |
| student guide |
Erasmus is not a well-known program in France. Therefore I often encountered
problems because teaching staff nor administration personnel knew all the details about
what had to be done. France welcomes a lot of foreign students but has almost no outgoing.
Luckily, the Erasmus-program is gaining attention. No practical information for incoming
students is momentarily availably however. As Erasmus-student you are categorized as
auditeur libre, which means you can pick any brick, any course that suits you
(as long as your sending university is approving your choice). Taking this into
consideration, the choice of bricks is enormous in all kinds of domains: electronics,
programming, signal and image-processing and managerial skills as well as language
courses. The full course catalogue can be found at http://www.infres.enst.fr/enst/ . |
| housing |
Your housing is taken care of when applying before summer vacation. The residence
is located at the front of the school, so no transportation is needed. A rather large
studio (own bathroom, shared toilets) costs a bit more than 300euro/month. All facilities
you might need are available at the residence itself, including 100Mbps
internet-connection and a telephone connection in each room. It can be useful to know
that due to a partnership with France Télécom a telephone call from your
room at ENST to a mobile phone in Belgium only costs 0.80euro/min! |
| special aspects |
Paris, even for students, is a very expensive city to live in. Prices of general
consumer goods in a supermarket equal Belgian prices. The amount you spend monthly,
depends on your lifestyle. It might be best to give some prices in order to get the
impression:
A good lunch or dinner at the ENST-restaurant : 2.5 Eur
Entrance Student party: 12 Eur
Entrance Discotheque: 20 Eur
Monthly transportation fees (Carte Imagine R for subways, buses): 35 Eur
Bottle of wine (supermarket): 2 Eur
Leffe (in a pub): 5-10 Eur
Film (in a movietheatre): 4-5 Eur |

 | It might be useful to participate in the "intensive language course" at the
beginning of september. This two-week-event is organized by ParisTech (joined Grandes
Écoles in Paris); more information can be found on www.paristech.org.
This course can be accredited for 2 ECTS-points. |
 | A thesis as we know it in Belgium, is not custom (even somewhat unknown) in France. The
best practice might be to look for a subject in Ghent and try to convince an academical
staffmember at ENST to be your supervisor, whilst taking this subject as a project-brick
(3B/2). |
 | Courses are divided into two categories: full bricks (marked B) are equivalent to 9
ECTS-credits and half-bricks (B/2) logically 4,5 credits. Important courses are taught
every trimester, so you can easily pick the ones that look most appealing. There is only
time for 2B each trimester, which makes a yearly total of 54 credits for
technically/economically oriented courses. A language course (45 hours of classes and an
additional 10 hours spent at home per trimester) gives 1,5 credits per trimester. |
 | The workload at ENST is heavier than in Ghent (no time set aside for studying, lot of
projects), so be prepared. |
