
Ir. Joris Roels, PhD student at the Photonics Research Group, INTEC,
Ghent University, was awarded the Barco High Tech Award for Scientific
Research on 'Actuation of Integrated Components through the Optical
Gradient Force' on Friday October 15 2010. Besides the award, he also
received the corresponding prize money of 5.000 Euro.
The
awards are given by Barco nv in collaboration with the Vlaamse
Ingenieurskamer (VIK), vzw Bachelor.be and the Fund for Scientific
Research (FWO) in order to boost scientific and technological research.
The awards also emphasize the importance of the Flemish reseach oriented
economy, innovation and close cooperation between educational
institutions, research institutes and industry.
Barco High Tech Awards is the new - more international - name for the
'prizes for Scientific Research' which Barco grants since 1987. The
awards were created in collaboration with the FWO to stimulate and
support research and innovation in Flanders.
The
presentation of the High Tech Awards took place during a special
ceremony at Kinepolis Ghent, and the winners, educational institutions
and other guests were invited to a movie which was shown as part of the
Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, which can
be considered to be one of the most prominent film events in Europe and
sponsored by Barco.
