Abstract

Gold gratings are proposed for efficient coupling between optical fibers and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. They are compact and very easy to fabricate using a processing scheme based on lift-off. In this paper, a gold grating coupler is demonstrated with 34 % coupling efficiency at a wavelength of 1.55 um. The measurement results are in good agreement with simulation results.
