Abstract

We studied the optical absorption of silicon-oninsulator
(SOI) strip waveguides (WGs) functionalized by a
monolayer of colloidal PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots. The
integration is done by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition, providing
a monolayer of quantum dots (QDs) on the waveguides.
Using a refractive index value determined from effective medium
theory including dipolar coupling between the QDs, we obtain
simulated values for the QD absorption coefficient in the WGs
that are in quantitative agreement with the experimental loss
values (9 dB/mm) around 1520 nm. Based on the host permittivity
value obtained from a simple planar waveguide geometry, we
are able to model the QD absorption coefficients in more
complex strip waveguides. We show that the morphology of the
deposited monolayer needs to be taken into account to explain the
experimental loss values. Given the size-tunable optical properties
of the QDs and their suitability for wet processing, these results
will enable engineering colloidal QDs for low-cost silicon photonic
devices.
