Mingshan Zhao received his B. Sc. degree in physics from Qufu Normal University, Shandong, China, in 1982; M. Sc. degree in condensed matter physics from Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China, in 1986; PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Ghent University, Gent, Belgium, in February of 2003.

In November 1998, he joined the Optoelectronic Components and Systems group in the Department of Information Technology, Ghent University, and has mainly worked on SOA-based devices for optical regeneration and spectrum-sliced wavelength division multiplexing. His work in these fields has led to 14 international journal publications and conference presentations (OFC, CLEO, ECOC, LEOS).

Before 1998 he worked in the fields of nonlinear optical spectroscopy, optical components and systems in the Laser Institute, Qufu Normal University, Shandong, China, as a full-time professor (1994-1998), an associate professor (1992-1994), and a lecturer (in Physics Department, 1986-1992). He is a recipient of a number of awards:
