Abstract
In this chapter we discuss the elemental building blocks to implement optical interconnects on a chip: light sources, photodetectors, switches and multiplexers and of course, the optical waveguides. We discuss how these building blocks can be implemented using silicon technology and evaluate the different integration strategies of the optical layer with
