Abstract
Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) are one of the most commonly used photonics integrated components for wavelength de/multiplexing. For WDM communication applications it is desirable to have an AWG with low loss and low crosstalk. For silicon the high contrast waveguides reduced the device footprint but they are also extremely sensitive to phase errors and lossy. This research work was carried out to improve the performance of the silicon AWG. During this work an integrated design and simulation framework was developed the validity of which was confirmed by experimental results. Silicon AWGs were designed to achieve various characteristics like flattop spectral response, polarization insensitive operation, wavelength (de)multiplexing, wavelength routing and optical packet switch.
