Abstract
We will present our current developments in Programmable photonic integrated circuits (PIC). These generic optical circuits, which consist of a network of tunable couplers and phase shifters, can be electrically controlled to perform different functions. In this, they form an optical equivalent to an FPGA. This new class of PICs requires different use of electro-optic drivers and monitors, advanced packaging, and additional layers of software, compared to today's application-specific PICs. But they can be used for different applications, and their programmability can pave the way for rapid prototyping of new photonic circuits. Related Research Topics
