The detection of subcellular molecules is crucial for both understanding cellular processes and developing new drugs. The use of fluorescent labels has been of paramount importance for visualizing specifically targeted molecule, but is limited by the labels itself. Recently, labelfree methods for intracellular sensing have gained large interested because of their strong multiplexing capacities and fingerprint specificity. The latter argument is particularly valid for Raman Spectroscopy. However, Raman spectroscopy produces extremely low signals. Current methods using colloidal gold nanoparticles for enhancing the Raman signal suffer from a poor reproducibility and a highly nonuniform enhancement.
In this project we investigate a new way for enhancing the intracellular Raman signal using cavity resonances in silicon nitride photonic chips. This interdisciplinary PhD is a joint project between the Department of Molecular Biotechnology (prof. AG Skirtach) and the Photonics Research Group, combining expertise on cell biology with photonic integration under the framework of NB Photonics.
