Integrated lasers and LEDs Most of the research on integrated lasers and LEDs is focused on laser diodes heterogeneously integrated on silicon-on-insulator. This includes microdisk lasers, DFB and DBR lasers and new laser diode concepts (such as ultracompact membrane lasers). The applications are in both datacom/telecom and optical sensing, while the wavelengths range from the visible to the mid-infrared.
In addition to the research on heterogeneously integrated, electrically pumped, laser diodes, there is considerable effort on the use of colloidal quantum dots for use in optically pumped light sources at different wavelengths.
