Silicon photonics for telecom, datacom and interconnect The ability to realize complex circuits on a very small footprint and potentially for a very low cost makes silicon photonics a promising platform for datacom and telecom applications. The latter now mostly rely on complex transmitters and receivers compatible with multi-level data modulation and coherent detection. Several of the research topics therefore focus on the building blocks required to build these (tunable lasers, narrow line width, complex receiver chips …). For optical interconnect applications massive parallelism (and hence compactness), ultralow power consumption and integration with electronics is key.
